The Wheel To The Storm Web Site
The goal here is to
circulate high-quality live concert recordings, electronically. Files are compressed using LosslessEncoding schemes to shorten transfers enough so that anyone with a broadband connection can participate.
Wheel To The Storm owns nothing. It is not a corporation and there certainly are
no corporate offices. The belief is that music which bands permit to be traded, should be freely traded. Not all music is available here. Wheel To The Storm deals exclusively with legally tradeable music. Only live recordings by artists that allow taping and/or free trading of their performances.
Out of respect to those who create this
music for us, all are prohibited from using this site to exchange
music unless the artist permits doing so. Breaking this rule will get
you banished from this sites ftp servers and forums -- Wheel To The Storm takes this very seriously. This
prohibition extends to all commercial recordings, live
performances by non-taper/trader friendly bands, and even certain shows
that taper/trader-friendly bands asked not to trade (most often
because the band has released it for sale to the public).
The idea of trading high-quality audio files over the Internet was
first considered in 1996. It was initally dismissed due to the large
file sizes involved in lossless compression, as opposed to much
smaller, but lossy, .mp3 files. Enter the advent of
broadband. Lossless files were now viable for transfer at the new
broadband speeds. Wheel To The Storm jumped in with a modest
helping of Grateful Dead shows. February 11th, 2003 [WheelFTP] transfered it's first show. Then on February 13th, 2005, the public [Archive] site served it's first show download. [WheelFTP]
on March 29th, 2009 celebrated having 5,000 hrs of music on it,
which translates into over 1,700 shows by 259 Artists, while the public
[Archive] site still remained small with only a handful of shows.
[WheelFTP] vs. [Archive]. The main purpose of this site is to distribute the live shows recorded by [WheelToTheStormProductions]. Other secondary purposes are to trade legally TradeFriendly live shows and serve as a live recording [ResourceLibrary]. So above all, this site just deals with primarily master recordings. The [Archive] is where these recordings are listed, and available for streaming/downloading. [WheelFTP] is much more private. It's the electronic version of coming over to my house and trading as much music as you would like. The only restrictions is it must be TradeFriendly.
As with our analogy though, you need to be invited in. User Names and
Passwords are assigned, and access can range from the full collection
to a single show. File Transfer can be done in both directions, so
users can download, and if they would like, upload shows to share with
other users. There are no upload to download ratios, and there is
absolutely no charge.
